Fairfax County Board of Supervisors holds public hearing on comprehensive plan amendment

October 14, 2004

Fairfax County Planning Commission recommends approval of comprehensive plan amendment.

July 22, 2004   Citizens working group endorses comprehensive plan amendment for Metro West at public hearing of the Fairfax County Planning Commission.
July 12, 2004  

Metro West meets with Providence District Council.

July 8, 2004  

Fairfax County Planning Commission staff report recommends out-of-turn plan amendment.

June 27, 2004  

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopts The Environmental Agenda, which supports mixed-use development near transit stops, integrating pedestrian-oriented neighborhood commerce into new communities and providing pedestrian amenities.

2003-Present   Metro West meetings with Workgroup, Fairfax County Trails Committee, Virginia Department of Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, Fairfax County Parks Authority and others
September 2003  

Fairlee Workgroup is formed by then Providence District Supervisor Gerry Connolly to consider issues surrounding redevelopment of Fairlee-Metro West.

July 24, 2003  

Fairfax County Planning Commission asks for additional study of plan amendment and alternatives.

July 2003   Smart Growth Alliance recognizes Metro West redevelopment plans as contributing land use, transportation and environmental advantages to Fairfax County and the Washington region.
June 25, 2003   Fairfax County Planning Commission holds public hearing on out-of-turn plan amendment.
June 5, 2003   Fairfax County Planning Commission staff recommends Comprehensive Plan amendments to provide an opportunity for mixed-use “transit-oriented” development at Fairlee-Metro West.
March 2003   Community-wide forum held at Oakton High School to present and discuss Metro West redevelopment.
October 28, 2002   Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorizes out-of-turn plan amendment S02-II-V2 for what has become known as “Fairlee” or “Metro West.”
Summer 2002   Complete consolidation of Fairlee and Sweeney properties begins making extension of Vaden Drive possible.
February 2002   Fairfax County Planning Commission denies APR for Fairlee subdivision citing lack of consolidation with “Sweeney” property, lack of full consolidation within Fairlee and inability to construct Vaden Drive extended.
June 2001   Assembly of properties begins for redevelopment south of the Vienna-Fairfax-GMU Metro Station.
